Program Information and Application Process

Participant Support

The program will be based in La Serena, Chile on the NOIRLab campus. For each of the six students we expect to support each year, NOIRLab will provide a weekly stipend of USD 650 and housing in La Serena for the duration of the program, and will cover the cost of travel to/from Chile.

Important Dates (anticipated)

23 September 2024  Application deadline
1 November  Students selected and participation confirmed
15 November Pre-orientation for mentors and participants
15 January 2025 Core program start
20 March  Post program evaluations by participants
21 March Core program end

Please note that to participate in the program you will need to hold a valid passport in advance of the program start date. 

How to Apply

This program is open to undergraduate students who are US citizens, US nationals, or US permanent residents. Interested students are invited to apply by submitting these materials by the application deadline of 23 September 2024

Part 1: Complete the online application form (the link will be added here when available) where you can 

  • Provide your contact information
  • Describe your educational background and any past research experience
  • Tell us why you are interested in our REU program
  • Upload your official undergraduate transcript 

Part 2: Arrange to have a letter of recommendation sent on your behalf (email address to send it to will be added here when available). Consider requesting a letter from someone familiar with your educational background, research experience (if any), and career goals, e.g., a teacher, professor, mentor, etc.
